THE TRILLION DOLLAR REASON THEY’RE WATCHING YOU.

I used to think it was just me. I would sit down at my desk, open my laptop to study, and decide to check my phone for just a minute. Next thing I knew, an hour had vanished. I felt a strange, hollow exhaustion, a low-level anxiety humming in the background, and a profound inability to focus on the textbook in front of me. I blamed my own lack of discipline. I told myself I was weak, that I just needed more willpower.

But then I started looking into it. I started reading the patents, the earnings reports, the psychological studies, and the testimonies of the very people who built the apps on my phone. What I found wasn’t a story about my personal failure. It was a story about a highly engineered, trillion-dollar system designed to do exactly what it was doing to me.

Every time you open a social media app, you are stepping into a casino where the house always wins, and the currency you are gambling with is your own mind. This isn’t a metaphor. It is the literal business model of the most profitable companies in human history. They have turned human attention into a commodity, and they are strip-mining our generation’s cognitive capacity to sell it to the highest bidder.


The Architects of the Casino

We tend to think of social media platforms as neutral tools, like a hammer or a telephone. But a telephone doesn’t have thousands of engineers on the other end of the line trying to figure out how to keep you talking for another hour.

The mechanisms that keep us scrolling were not accidents. They were deliberately designed by people who understood exactly how the human brain works. Take B.J. Fogg, a Stanford professor who founded the Behaviour Design Lab. For years, he taught a class on how to use technology to persuade people and change their behaviour. His students went on to found and design some of the most addictive features on the internet, including Mike Krieger, the co-founder of Instagram. [1]

Or consider Justin Rosenstein, the Facebook engineer who co-invented the “Like” button. He later described the feature he helped create as “bright dings of pseudo-pleasure.” [2] The Like button wasn’t just a way to show appreciation; it was a mechanism for intermittent reinforcement.

Intermittent reinforcement is a concept from behavioural psychology, most famously demonstrated by B.F. Skinner. If you give a rat a pellet of food every time it presses a lever, it will press the lever when it’s hungry. But if you give the rat a pellet of food at random, unpredictable intervals, it will press the lever obsessively, even when it’s not hungry. This is the same psychological mechanism that makes slot machines so addictive. And it is the same mechanism that powers your social media feed. You pull down to refresh, and you never know what you’re going to get. A like? A comment? A funny video? Or nothing at all? That unpredictability is what keeps you pulling the lever. [3]

Then there is Aza Raskin, the inventor of the infinite scroll. Before infinite scroll, you had to click “Next Page” at the bottom of a website. That click was a stopping cue — a moment for your brain to pause and ask, “Do I want to keep reading?” Raskin’s invention removed that stopping cue entirely. The content just keeps loading, endlessly, seamlessly. Raskin later expressed deep regret for his invention, realising that it was keeping people trapped in a loop they couldn’t easily break out of. [4]

These architects didn’t set out to destroy our attention spans. They set out to solve a business problem: how to keep users engaged for as long as possible. But in doing so, they weaponised our own psychology against us. As Sean Parker, the former president of Facebook, bluntly admitted, the platform was designed to “consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible,” exploiting a “vulnerability in human psychology.” [5]


The Trillion-Dollar Harvest

Why go to all this trouble? Why hire thousands of the smartest engineers in the world to figure out how to keep a 19-year-old in Sri Lanka scrolling through videos at 2 AM?

The answer is money. Staggering, incomprehensible amounts of money.

The classic saying goes, “If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product.” But as Jaron Lanier, a pioneer of virtual reality, points out, that’s a little too simplistic. It’s not your data they’re primarily after. It’s something more intimate than that. “It’s the gradual, slight, imperceptible change in your own behaviour and perception that is the product,” Lanier says. “That’s the only thing there is for them to make money from. Changing what you do, how you think, who you are.” [6]

This is what Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff calls “surveillance capitalism.” These companies are not just selling ads; they are selling certainty — the ability to predict and influence what you will do next. To understand how they pull this off, you have to understand how the machine actually works.

Inside the Machine: How Predictive Algorithms Work

Here is the architecture of the system that is watching you, explained without the jargon.

Every time you open a social media app, the algorithm is running a calculation. Its singular goal is not to show you things you’ll enjoy. Its goal is to show you things you are most likely to interact with, because interaction equals time spent on the platform, and time spent equals money. [7] These are not the same thing — a fact worth sitting with.

To make that calculation, the algorithm collects signals. Hundreds of them, constantly. Not just what you like and comment on, but the things you never consciously register: how long you pause on a post before scrolling, what time of day you tend to feel lonely, whether you watch a video to the end or bail after three seconds, how quickly you skip past a particular type of content. TikTok has publicly confirmed that watch time — specifically, how many seconds you spend on each video before moving on — is its single most powerful ranking signal. [8] Every hesitation is data.

This data is fed into a machine-learning model. The model does not read your mind. It does something more unsettling: it finds other people who have behaved exactly like you in the past, maps what they did next, and serves you that content. As of 2019, Instagram’s recommendation engine was already processing 65 billion data points and making 90 million model predictions per second. [9] The scale of this operation is difficult to fathom.

The output is what researchers call a “behavioural fingerprint” — a model of you that is accurate enough to predict your reactions before you have them. [10] Users frequently report that TikTok seems to know them better than their own friends do. That’s not mysticism. That’s the result of your behaviour being mapped, at a granular level, over months and years. The machine has been studying you far longer and more carefully than any human ever has.

And here is what the machine is optimising for: not your wellbeing, not your information, not even your enjoyment. It is optimising for retention — the probability that you will come back again tomorrow. Content that makes you angry, anxious, or emotionally activated keeps you on the platform longer than content that makes you calm and satisfied. The algorithm has learned this. Not because anyone programmed it to make you miserable, but because misery, as it turns out, is extraordinarily engaging. [11]

This is what Zuboff means by selling certainty. The better the behavioural model, the more confidently a platform can promise an advertiser: we can put your message in front of this specific type of person at the exact moment they are most susceptible to it. [12] In 2025, Meta reported annual revenue of $200.97 billion. [13] ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, targeted around $186 billion in sales. [14] YouTube generated over $60 billion. [15] Between just these three entities, we are looking at nearly $450 billion in annual revenue — more than the GDP of many developed nations. Meta’s market capitalisation sits in the trillions, and ByteDance is valued at roughly $1.5 trillion. [16]

The fuel for that engine is your attention. Every second you spend scrolling, every moment of outrage, every late-night rabbit hole — all of it is being monetised. They are strip-mining your consciousness, and they are making trillions of dollars doing it.


The Measurable Damage to Our Minds

If this were just about money, it would be bad enough. But the cost of this trillion-dollar industry is not measured in dollars. It is measured in the cognitive capacity of an entire generation.

What Attention Actually Is

Before we get to the damage, let’s establish what we’re actually talking about when we say “attention span,” because it’s a term that gets thrown around without much explanation.

Attention is simply your brain’s ability to direct and hold its focus on one thing. Think of it like a spotlight. You can only shine it in one direction at a time, and it takes real mental energy to keep it pointed where you want it. When you study for an exam, write an essay, or try to understand a difficult concept, you are relying on your ability to hold that spotlight steady for an extended period. Researchers call this “sustained attention” — the capacity to remain focused on a task without your mind drifting away. [17]

It is not a glamorous skill. Nobody makes TED Talks about their impressive ability to sit quietly and focus. But it is arguably the most important cognitive ability you have. Every meaningful thing a human being has ever built — every scientific discovery, every piece of literature, every piece of code — required someone to hold their attention on a hard problem long enough to solve it.

Now look at what is happening to ours.

In 2015, the average social media user could focus on a single post for around 12 seconds. By 2025, that figure had dropped to roughly 8 seconds. [18] Teen users now switch between apps every 44 seconds, compared to 2.5 minutes a decade ago. [19] A 2025 study found that simply watching short-form video content before attempting to study reduced students’ reading attention span by 31%. [20] And research published in the Eurasian Journal of Applied Linguistics found a direct correlation between time spent consuming short-form reels and students’ tendency toward attentional lapses, with those who watched more reels performing worse academically. [21]

What’s happening is not that we are becoming stupid. It’s that we are being trained. Our brains are plastic — meaning they adapt to the demands placed on them. If you spend five hours a day consuming content in eight-second bursts, your brain gets very good at processing eight-second bursts and very bad at processing anything longer. A 2025 study found that heavy social media users — five or more hours daily — were 33% more likely to experience what researchers are calling “attention fragmentation”: the inability to hold a thought long enough to develop it into something coherent. [22]

You are not losing the ability to pay attention. You are paying attention, just to shorter and shorter things. And the compounding effect of that is that the world of ideas, which requires long attention to access, is becoming harder and harder to enter.

What’s Happening to Your Brain

The cognitive changes are real. But so are the structural ones, and this is where the research gets genuinely alarming.

The adolescent brain — which researchers define as roughly ages 10 to 25 — is not a finished product. It is a construction site. [23] During this period, the brain is undergoing two simultaneous and critical processes: synaptic pruning, in which unused neural connections are eliminated, and myelination, in which the surviving connections are insulated to make them faster and more efficient. The result of this process is a brain that is better at the things it practises and progressively worse at the things it neglects. [24]

This is neuroplasticity: the brain’s remarkable ability to physically reshape itself based on experience. It is the reason musicians have denser motor cortex regions, the reason London taxi drivers have larger hippocampi, and the reason fluent readers process text automatically in ways non-readers do not. The brain builds what it uses.

The region most affected by this remodelling — and most relevant to what we’re discussing — is the prefrontal cortex (PFC). The PFC is the brain’s command centre. It is responsible for decision-making, impulse control, long-term planning, and the ability to stay focused on a task in the face of distraction. Crucially, the PFC is the last region of the brain to fully mature — it is still developing well into your mid-twenties. [25]

Research published in Nature Communications confirmed that the most extensive structural changes during adolescence occur in precisely the regions governing cognitive control and social processing: the medial prefrontal cortex, the superior temporal cortex, and the temporal parietal junction. [26] A longitudinal study tracking adolescents over time found that those who used social media more heavily than their peers showed accelerated cortical thinning in the lateral and medial PFC — meaning their prefrontal cortices were thinning faster than normal development would predict. [27]

Cortical thinning in the PFC is associated, in the research literature, with reduced impulse control and greater susceptibility to compulsive behaviour. [28] To put it plainly: the same part of the brain that is supposed to help you resist distraction and make long-term decisions is the part that excessive social media use appears to be thinning fastest.

A 2025 neuroimaging review published in the Journal of Neurophysiology synthesised studies on social media and the adolescent brain and confirmed the pattern: problematic social media use shows overlapping brain signatures with other compulsive disorders, particularly in the regions responsible for cognitive control. [29] Research from ScienceDirect found that the neuroplasticity of the adolescent brain during puberty — the heightened sensitivity that makes it such a powerful learning organ — is the same quality that makes it uniquely vulnerable to environmental stressors like the constant stimulation of social media. [30]

In other words, the brain that is most capable of being shaped is the brain that is most at risk of being shaped in the wrong direction.

A more recent study, published in the National Centre for Biotechnology Information, identified the downstream effects of this reshaping in behavioural terms: emotional desensitisation, cognitive overload, and a degraded self-concept — what researchers are now beginning to call “brain rot” in the clinical literature. [31] The term is deliberately confrontational, but the phenomenon it describes is real.

We are not just losing time. We are losing the architecture of thought itself.


The Regret of the Creators

Perhaps the most damning evidence against the attention economy comes from the people who built it.

Chamath Palihapitiya, the former Vice President of User Growth at Facebook, didn’t mince his words when he finally spoke publicly about his time at the company. He told an audience at Stanford Graduate School of Business that he felt “tremendous guilt” for his role, and that the tools they built were “ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.” He does not let his own children use them. [32]

Tristan Harris, a former Design Ethicist at Google, has become one of the most vocal critics of the industry. He argues that the business model of these companies is fundamentally incompatible with human well-being. “It’s not like anybody wants this to happen,” Harris has said. “It’s just that this is what the recommendation system is doing.” [33] The algorithms are not malicious. They are just ruthlessly optimising for engagement — and in doing so, they have discovered that the fastest path to engagement is very often the path that leaves humans worse off.

Jeff Seibert, a former tech executive, put it most plainly: “Everything they’re doing online is being watched, is being tracked, is being measured. Every single action you take is carefully monitored and recorded.” [34]

These are not the words of luddites or conspiracy theorists. These are the people who wrote the code, designed the interfaces, and built the systems that now govern our lives. They know exactly how the machine works. And they are telling us, as clearly as they can, that the machine does not have our interests at heart.


The Reframe: Seeing the System Clearly

So, what do we do?

The standard advice is usually some variation of “delete your apps” or “do a digital detox.” I’m not going to give you that advice, because it misses the point entirely. It treats this as a personal failing — a weakness of character that can be overcome by trying harder. But as we’ve now seen in some detail, that framing is exactly what the industry wants you to believe.

This is not a fair fight. You are not fighting your own laziness. You are fighting a trillion-dollar industry staffed by some of the most brilliant engineers and behavioural scientists in the world, optimising against you in real time, using a model of your psychology that is likely more accurate than your own self-image.

Understanding that changes things. Not because it gives you a magic solution, but because it changes where you place the blame — and therefore where you direct your energy.

When you understand the system, the mechanisms lose some of their invisible power. The infinite scroll stops feeling like freedom and starts feeling like what it is: a deliberately engineered removal of your ability to choose when to stop. The “For You” page stops feeling like serendipity and starts feeling like what it is: a machine that has been studying your emotional vulnerabilities for years and is now serving you content calibrated to exploit them. The dopamine spike when your post gets likes stops feeling like a connection and starts feeling like what it is: a “bright ding of pseudo-pleasure,” engineered by someone who understood Skinner better than you did.

This is the most honest thing I can offer you: these companies are not neutral. They are not your friends. They are highly optimised systems designed to extract as much of your time and attention as possible, at whatever cost to your mental architecture that extraction requires. That is not a conspiracy theory. It is the business model, described accurately, by the people who built it.

Once you see that, you can decide what to do with it. You can decide what your attention is actually worth, what you want to build with it, and what you’re willing to let be taken. The industry has spent years telling you the problem is your willpower. The actual problem is that you were never told you were in a fight.

Now you know.


WHAT I ASSUMED before researching this

I assumed my inability to focus was a personal failure. I thought social media companies were just providing a service, and that if I spent too much time on them, it was my own fault for lacking discipline. I believed the platforms were neutral and that the algorithms were just trying to show me things I liked.

WHAT RESEARCH SHOWED that surprised me most

Two things. First, the precision of the surveillance: the fact that an algorithm is tracking not just what you click, but how long you hesitate before scrolling — and feeding that hesitation into a behavioural fingerprint that predicts your reactions better than you can predict your own. Second, the specific vulnerability of the adolescent brain. The prefrontal cortex — the very part of the brain responsible for resisting distraction and making long-term decisions — is still developing until your mid-twenties, and it appears to be the region most structurally affected by heavy social media use. The system is most damaging to the people least equipped to defend against it.

WHAT I STILL DON’T KNOW

I still don’t know how we regulate a system this deeply embedded in both our economy and our daily lives. If the fundamental business model of the modern internet is built on extracting human attention — and if that model is generating nearly half a trillion dollars a year — the financial incentive to keep things exactly as they are is almost incomprehensibly large. And more personally, I don’t know how long it takes for our generation to undo the structural changes that have already happened. The research on brain plasticity suggests the damage is not permanent. But it also suggests it isn’t trivial. We are the first generation to grow up inside this machine. We are still figuring out what that means.
